Our primary purpose, our raison d’ĂȘtre is to provide a 999 response to members of our local community when they experience a medical emergency. Trained, assessed, approved and dispatched by the East Midlands Ambulance Service, we are sent to a range of emergency and urgent medical issues in our local area that fall within our scope of practice.
Due to our proximity to those we treat, we often arrive on scene first, reaching our patients before an emergency ambulance which is often travelling from further afield. This allows us to provide observation, intervention or simply reassurance to our patients before a full-time crew arrives. On their arrival, we continue to work with the ambulance crew to safely and effectively treat, package and prepare our patients for transport or for on-scene discharge if appropriate.
Due to the sheer size of the area we cover, nearly 180 square miles (!), each of our first responders average a patient for every 4 hours spent on call with jobs ranging from minor illness right through to cardiac arrest.
Each of our responders carries their own personal issue kit with everything they need to manage a patients condition within their scope of practice. See more about our kit here
